The first task to get in a good position to the start point I accomplished well loosing 8 secs to leading Lidingö. I felt solid as a rock as three people fell to the ground just next to me. Running the first kilometer with the short forest passage in 3.35 was probably too fast for me: When trying to cross the second fence the barbed wire cut my finger and took away the SI card. I realized it right away but lost still 12 valuable seconds and maybe twice as many places.

Why I did not look on the compass just before the first control I cannot explain. Most likely I just had the feeling that some people were punching the control over there and I followed the wrong ones. From then on I have been constantly loosing more control over my mind as I was giving away positions. I knew if I stay passive the queue is going to stretch and I am going to loose time. So the only thing I was focusing on was trying to go out of the line and overtake some people. I could not find the balance between reading the map as good as needed and overtaking. The mistake to the third made the situation even more awkward.

As you can see I have been running fast but without reading the map. Therefore I gained 21 seconds and many positions up to the point before control 6 where I should have turned left and loosing 10 times as many thereafter. What disappoints me is that I was never able to shift a switch in my brain. At 6 I saw Teemu and he said something motivating to me like: “Come on Simi go for it!” The alarm bells have been ringing and for a moment I had the feeling that I have been reading the map more properly. But after the race I have to say that maybe still nothing changed and the second best time from control 6 to eleven was just because there was no forking.

To number 13 I still had the same attitude: “hm – what's over there?” From then on the power was a bit gone. I was still fighting hard, gained some positions and could close a gap to a large pack. But the leading group and especially Jere Pajunen who was a bit behind himself pushed hard and I lost some more seconds.

It was nice to see that my running speed especially in the forest is on a good level however I was very disappointed of my kind of “non-existing” technical performance. The good race of Sevä and the great run of Elias to the leading group cheered me up and I realized that my mistakes where not that decisive but still I am messed up with the first leg. I always had the opinion that I am good at running at my – over my – limits and taking the right controls but maybe the scale of a 10mila or Jukola is just too large as there is too much running and fighting to the start point and to control one. Very tired I went to the hotel for sleeping some hours but I was too excited after the performance of Elias and could not find any sleep. The great performances of my teammates catapulted us in the top 15. Next chance to orienteer better is on the long test race on Thursday the 14th.
